The northern soul scene and motown scene continues to thrive and continues to remain largely underground despite repeated attempts to draw attention to it by movie makers (another film simply called "Northern Soul" is due to be released in 2012 and actually looks like it might be a good one).  Northern Soul DJs require a constant diet of original northern soul 45s in order to feed their playboxes and whether you subscribe to the original vinyl only school of thought or not, there are always going to be loads of northern soul records that have never been bootlegged or reissued so unless you want to arrange to get your own cut onto vinyl, you're going to have to bite the bullet and buy the original 45s if you want to DJ out with many northern soul tunes.

It's important that you check the description carefully for any expressions such as bootleg, reissue, second issue etc. which mean it's not an original. Also, be wary of records listed as being brand new if you are after an original - obviously ex-warehouse northern soul 45s do turn up even now, but they are getting harder to find.

Northern soul embraces a wide range of music styles and even eras these days and one persons Wigan Casino oldie might not be someone elses crossover magic.
